Project: Post-charge Restorative Justice Support for Those Affected by Sexual Misconduct

Ottawa, ON — The staff, board members and supporters of the Collaborative Justice Program: Restorative Justice Ottawa (CJP) are pleased to announce that the Department of National Defence, Sexual Misconduct Support and Resource Centre (SMSRC) has awarded a recurrent grant to CJP in 2023. This adult post charge program will allow CJP to provide its restorative justice services to Defence community cases involving sexual misconduct that have been transferred to the criminal court in Ottawa.

This funding will strengthen the services for those affected by sexual misconduct in the CAF/DND, while demonstrating how community-based support can hold those responsible meaningfully accountable to those they have hurt. For victims, the restorative justice process can provide an opportunity to learn more about the offence and the accused, to access community resources to assist in recovery, to receive an apology, to describe the impact of the crime on their life, to assess whether the accused is remorseful, to have a voice in the criminal justice process, to indicate what is needed for meaningful reparation, and to receive reassurance about changed future behaviours.

We are immensely grateful to DND - SMSRC for this grant and for supporting our mission and we look forward to serving our community and supporting our military members, one case at a time through restorative justice.
